15th July 1944 squadrons 144 RAF, 404 Canadian, 455 Australian and 489 New Zealand, a total of 34 Beaufighters flying near the Southern tip of Norway near Mandal came across two columns of merchant ships surrounded by escorts ships (a total of nine ships). All the ships were left on fire. crews saw a cargo ship of 5,000 tons “completely dissolve in a terrific explosion which could be heard over the sound of the aircraft engines after being torpedoed by one of the 489 NZ squadron Beaufighter.
