RESULTS ARE IN - Top Ten Aviation Originals Of 2016 !!!

Collecting Aviation Art
Another year, another successful original art contest!

I  always look forward to  seeing  this roundup of the year's artist creations and collector acquisitions.   Seems like others do as well, since the contest threads have had over 1300 views.

Thanks to the artists for creating and sharing your work, thanks to collectors for sharing your acquisitions, and thanks to the members who voted.

Usually, the contests are  very close, with one year ending in a tie, but this year had a clear winner:

  VOTING

Decide which 5 originals you like the most, and number them from 1 to 5.

The original numbered 1 (your favorite) will receive 10 points.
The original numbered 2 will receive 8 points.
The original numbered 3 will receive 6 points.

The original numbered 4 will receive 4 points.
The original numbered 5 will receive 2 points.

Voting will end on January 31 as time stamped by the website.

The original that has accumulated the most points will be the top, or number 1 original of 2016. The original with the next highest collection of points will be placed in the number 2 position. It may happen that several originals may tie with the same point total. If that happens, they will share in their placement. For example, with the number 1 and 2 positions spoken for, say three originals tie for third place. Originals 3-5 are tied, will share third place, and will be listed in positions 3, 4 and 5 in alphabetical order by the artist's last name. There may be more than 10 originals placing if a tie situation takes up additional spots.

The winners will be posted on February 1.

Wow Kurt - this may  be the best group of submittals ever.   In one way or another, all are outstanding.   It's also nice to see a mixture of contemporary work and  paintings  by some of the pioneers of the aviation art genre.   Tough to select, but here  are the five at the top of my list:

1 - Clash Over the Ore - Gareth Hector

  2 - Greenheart Leader - Roy Grinnell

  3 -  Donavon Smith's P-47 "Ole Cock III" - Harley Copic

  4 -  P-47 Thunderbolt "Slick Chick" -  Darryl Legg

  5 -  JG-53 Aces Of 1940 -  Mark Postlethwaite

Hmmmmm - Two P-47s and two Me109s in my top five.   Should be interesting to see how others vote.

As always, thanks for all your time and effort in managing the "Top Ten" thread Kurt.   Well done!

Tough - I already voted for two with my pocketbook. Enjoyed picking three others ...

  1. Troy White - The Kidd

Nice to see the vertical aspect of aerial combat depicted so well. I always seem to focus on Hofer, and then where his attention is directed. Troy has done a wonderful job of putting that wingtip right in your face.

  2. Gareth Hector - Clash over the Ore

Gareth keeps hitting them out of the park. Always captivated by what these 8th AF crews went through.

  3. David Gray - Ruptured Duck over Tokyo

David expertly painted the Ruptured Duck so that each section of the B-25 contrasts with the background. And the background, though very detailed, doesn't seem to compete with the Mitchell.

  4. Roy Grinnell - Greenheart Leader

I've seen this piece in person and it is magnificent. Simon must be thrilled to have it in his collection.

  5. Mark Postlethwaite - Tempest Units

Great sense of speed. Main subjects and background work good together. Do wish he would name all his paintings though instead of deferring some to book titles. His work deserves it.

Two days left to vote.   I have pulled up eHangar a couple of times and this thread did not show on the homepage - weird - so I'm adding a post.

The 2016 contest threads have had over 1100 views, so it seems like there should be a few more voters out there.   Of course, I still can't make up my mind!

I check here every morning whilst perusing the web and there have been a few generic 500 server error messages so there's that also.

OK, it's time for me to vote.

Once again, this year there are way more than 5 works I'd love to vote for.   I think Darryl Legg surely deserves a vote.   Unfortunately, I can't decide which one of his six paintings to vote for!   I just can't choose between the Ki-84s & the I-153.   So, I'll vote for some of the other artists this year.   You can take the fact that I commissioned those six paintings from Darryl, and the fact that I will commission several more in 2017, as my ultimate vote for his amazing talent!

  1)   Gareth Hector "Clash Over The Ore"

I've always loved Gareth's paintings.   He started off at a very high level, and just keeps getting better.   Last year's "Dropping In At The Horse And Jockey" was a bombshell.   "Clash Over The Ore" just keeps gathering upon that momentum.   Looking at it immediately makes you feel as if you are in the midst of that engagement.

  2)   Steve Anderson "Rendezvous"

Steve has long been one of my favorite artists.   My first painting commission was with Steve.   I have a nice little collection of Steve's paintings, and my only regret is that I did not commission even more!   The sea, the sky, the U boat, the aircraft - everywhere you look there is a display of talent and skill in this painting.   It all comes together seamlessly in a wonderful composition.

  3)   Steve Heyen "The Pack Forms"

Steve is really hitting his stride these days.   That main Me-109 looks perfect, and as always, Steve places the aircraft against an interesting sky.   Very cool.

  4)   Mark Postlethwaite "Tempest Units"

Mark's paintings are always well-done.   This one catches my eye right off the bat with a fantastic choice of aircraft.   Tempests & Me-262 - two great looking aircraft - and the Tempest is definitely one we don't see enough of.   Lots of motion in this one.   A great composition.

  5)   Troy White "The Kidd"

I love this composition.   I would love to see more portrait-style compositions showing aircraft moving in the vertical.   It just works really well.   I've never seen one of Troy's paintings in person, but I hope I get to see this one.   Maybe someday I'll make it back out to the Blacksheep's Stable for a look!

Too many honorable mentions to list, but I will give a shout to Don Wilkie.   Tremendous growth in his drawings and paintings.
