Unfortunately I don’t have any Spitfire book references in my library, and, due to a time constraint, won’t have time to search out and order any right now.

I am currently working on a piece that will include 2 Royal Australian Air Force (from the Darwin area) Spitfires. From my online research I have narrowed my choices to Squadron 54 and Squadron 452. I have found a few online color photos of Spits from these 2 squadrons–all artists’ renditions, not actual aircraft, or a few old black/white photos of actual Spits. While the colors/markings on the artists’ renditions may be accurate, I can’t really be sure. My questions are:

1. What color were the propeller hubs for Sq.54 and Sq.452? The renditions I have show the 54th hub in black, but for the 452nd one shows a black hub and one shows a red hub—????

2. Sq.54 shows a brown/green camoflage pattern of the a/c.
452 Sq color descriptions indicate their Spits were an overall foliage green color, with no camo pattern. Would these be correct?

Thanks again for any info.

Cheers,

Bill

G’day Bill,

While I can’t give you specific answers to your questions, I can refer you to an excellent online resource; “Pacific Spitfires” (www.pacificspitfires.com). You will need to become a member to access all of the information but it should give you all the answers you need and then some. There is also a recent Osprey book, “Spitfire Aces of Burma and the Pacific” by Andrew Thomas which has several colour profiles of relevant Spitfires. Hope this helps!

Cheers,
Adrian

Adrian,
Thanks for the recommendations. I had visited the Pacific Spitfires site before, but just now joined up. Awaiting their email to me with login information. I’ll check out the book you mention. Will let you know how the site is.

Captn

The profiles I have in Osprey’s Spitfire aces of Burma and the Pacific show

Sqdn 452 with black hubs with white stripes. Foliage Green and sky camo.

54sqn aircraft shows earth, foliage green and sky blue on a MkVIII spit. DL-V based in the Northern Territory Aug-Sep 1944.
Propellor hub was earth coloured.

Hi Bill

You posted this in the “Reviews, Comments and Questions” room of the Aviation Art Collectors section.

I have moved it here to the Aviation Artists’ section “Research Room” since this is the more appropriate section. 🙂
