This is nearing completion but something's missing; I've tried another aircraft but then it looks too cluttered. Maybe the foreground clouds need extending... does anyone have any ideas? The clouds haven't come out too well in this photo, but maybe the sky is the problem?

I think you are right - the clouds need work.  They look like puffy cumulus clouds, which I am used to seeing higher up in the sky rather than right down on the deck.  Perhaps you could rework the clouds - I might say to revise them more as mist or fog that is just above the river.  I might also blur the mist/fog to add more of a sense of speed to your painting.  It's looking good at this point!

Thanks for that, fuzzy... maybe the clouds lumped right in there are also stopping the flow of the picture and should, as you suggest, be less heavily worked.

The idea of blurring things to convey speed is something new I'm having to get to grips with; I'm more used to painting cows and there isn't usually a whole lot of movement going on there.

Edit:

I just spent another hour on this (see second image above) and already things look greatly improved... got more movement in it.
