OfflineI was going to do this as a full boring WIP, but now it is almost finished so it will be just a quicky
We actually had a sunny day & so I was able to dig out an old model & take some pictures..trees & electric pylons were in the backdrop so I had to cut the model out which I have never done before but it didn't take as long as I thought on the computer
The model is a Tamiya F4F which was ideal to use for the Fleet Air Arm

OfflineJust getting posted images without the source appearing
So got the model sorted, I took about 20 pics and narrowed it down to three and put them onto the canvas after sorting out the positions on the computer, I already had a sky in mind so I put the basics of the sky in and started painting the Martlets
The Sky in a mixiture of French Ultra Marine/Cobalt Blue/Rowney Rose/Naples Yellow 3/ & white
The Marlets are Oxide of Chromium/Cobalt Blue/Indigo/Naples Yellow 3/Chrome Orangs/White
The underside had me baffled as it's supposed to be Azure Blue…How do you make Azure Blue ?
Well I just used the same mix of paint in the end as I used for the upper surfaces but with differing amounts of each colour

OfflineThis is it so far
I have found some pics of ships in convoy, I think around 5-6 ships will be enough & these will be put in at the end
Still lots to do on the aircraft, lots of detail missing and panels/rivets have to be suggested
The Canopies have to be sorted out & a few other odds and ends, but so far it is almost as I wanted it to look
The size is 24x16 inches
So feel free to fire away….any comments are more than welcome

OfflineGlad to be back on hangar, i was having withdrawal for a while there. Just trying to get used to the new interface here.
Your painting is looking very nice Gollum, I find the ochre scheme on the Martlets very unusual, as is the choice of this subject matter. Congrats on the sale of your Bristols painting as well.![]()

OfflineHi paletteone
They are from 805 squadron which operated in the western desert & the canal zone 1941-42 their squadron crest is two palm trees with the motto (over sea and sand)
As a RN squadron in the western desert they have no particular claim to fame, they didn't even belong to a carrier, so yes you are right it is a peculiar subject, the sand colour scheme (odd for RN aircraft) is the same as all RAF Desert A/C
805 disbanded in 1945 & reformed as a Royal Austrailian Sqn & had the distinction of being the Carrier born first Fast Jet Sqn of the RAN
So why paint a odd plane from a insignificant squadron…….thats the kind of thing I do, I leave all the Glory paintings to everyone else, most of my stuff is unusual (or) different to what most people paint, I like Tranquill paintings & will paint the planes / squadrons etc that everyone else leaves out, I will do combat scenes…but very rarely
Bet you someone out there has been waiting for this painting to be done, just hope they see it ![]()

OfflineSpent a little time just roughing the planes up last night, I don't know whether i wished i had or not ![]()
On the painting it looks ok, on the photograph it looks more messed up than roughed up ![]()
Think i need to put a little paint back on the main aircraft as it looks a little battered

OfflineThanks you guys ![]()
CBI…..You ain't got no wall space left ![]()
Actually it is a kind of tester, I intend to do this one again….the same picture but with Hellcats (or) maybe Corsairs, I think with those two there is a chance of finding a more interesting squadron (with a history)
The sea and sky would be much better on a finer weave canvas, the sky should have more clouds reaching into the distance & the sea (should) have the clouds shadows on it, in the photograph of the sea it has the most wonderfull ripples across it (not waves) which was what drew me to using it in the first place…but there is no way i would attempt to paint such a subtle effect on this rough weave
I just wanted to see if it would make a pleasing picture & there is only one way to find that out…get the brushes out
