I would really like to see someone like Nicholas Trudgian tackle a pacific theatre B-29 and P-51 escort print. Something along the lines of “Ace of Diamonds”, just with different aircraft. It would be neat to see maybe Iwo Jima below the formation, or maybe even a burning Japanese city. I’m not aware of any prints that feature the B-29/ P-51 combo. I would certainly buy one.

Jason,

Robert Taylor’s “Valor in the Pacific” is a very close match to what you’re looking for. The Mustangs are small and in the background; however, they are there. The artwork is very good, as you would expect. It’s arguably as good as any B-29 print out there.

There’s an image of it in the eHangar database, but it’s pretty rough. Find a higher quality image to decide if it works for you.

Bushmasters On Guard by Brian Bell

Omitting the depictions of the atomic bombing missions, there are also these, sans P-51s –

Fifty Miles Out by William Phillips

Iwo Jima – A Hard-Won Haven by John Shaw

Enduring Eddie by John Young

I agree that there should be more. There are many artists here that would be more than happy to work with you on a B-29/P-51 project. 😎

Stormbird,

Wow – there’s one I’ve never seen before! Any details on this print? Was it published by Military Gallery, or someone else? I’m guessing someone else, since it is not in their catalog. Any signatures? How old is it?

That’s a really unique piece.

I saw the actual painting many many years ago on display and the australian war memorial in canberra australia.

Some of the details are actually listed on their website in the collection record (heres the shortcut http://cas.awm.gov.au/art/ART28996 ). but it was done way back in 1986. I only happened upon a print of this a couple of weeks ago and when i saw this post i thought it very fitting. Even i had completly forgot about this painting, till i was reminded about it……….Am now searching my many many photo albums for a snap shot of the original i took.

The Robert Taylor print above was commissioned by 77 Sqn RAAF and published in 1986 by the Australian War Memorial, not the Military Gallery which is why it doesn’t appear in their catalogue. The print bears the signatures of the pilots whose aircraft are depicted including the Squadron CO, Dick Creswell, who passed away in 2006. I’d never seen it myself until a couple of weeks ago, when I payed a visit to Aviation Art in Sandringham, Victoria (Australia). The proprieter, John Rayner, should be able to assist you further if you’re interested in obtaining a copy (see http://www.aviationart.com.au for contact details).

Thanks guys – it’s always interesting to discover such an obscure print – especially one done by Taylor.

I saw a picture in the Time Life series of books of P-51’s flying over Fuji and I have thought about trying to tackle something along these lines for quite a while. This is a preliminary composition with P-51’s escorting B-29’s enroute to Tokyo, over Mount Fuji. The markings will most likely be from 15th Fighter Group. I have yet to decide on which plane I would like to portray, it depends on how much relevant reference and info I can find. This is not any specific scene, more my vision of a routine escort mission to the Japanese capital. A suitable title might be ‘Impunity’. I would have posted this in the Ready Room, which I will do once I make some progress on it, however, I thought it relevant to this topic.

Brian, any updates on your B-29 ditching piece? The pencil sketches you showed awhile back looked great!

Hi Jason 1980-

I am chomping at the bit on that one!

I have it waiting on the back burner as I was commissioned to do a Spitfire piece from a collector in England and this is an detailed piece. It has taken me 4 months. I’ll post that one this week as it is almost finished. Need fresh eyes on that one as I have been staring at it for some time and this is a good place to have others take a look see.

Up next is the 29!! Looking forward to getting started on this one. November start date is planned!

Thanks for the inquiry.

😀
