Most eHangar members, if not all, are familiar with model box top art. Many of us, including yours truly, grew up admiring the wonderful box art from brands like Airfix, Hasegawa, Tamiya, Lindberg, Frog, Aurora, Revell and many others. While we may not have known the artists’ names when we were younger, today many of us recognise the names Roy Cross, Shigeo Koike and many others.

In this new forum section, let’s share our memories, enthusiasm and love for this special art genre, which is synonymous with aviation art. I invite you to share images of model box art, information on the art work and artists, and anything at all to do with this genre. I would like to acknowledge and thank eHangar member Guss who mooted the idea of starting this section – thank you, Guss!

Thank YOU Sunny, for starting this new Forum.  The idea actually came from an exchange that Kurt (fuzzy) and I had where we shared how much we both enjoyed model box art, and the good memories it brings back.  As Kurt correctly pointed out, “just about every collector’s first exposure to aviation art came from box art”.  So now it’s up to us to make use of this Forum – to share favorite kits, box art paintings, the box art creation process (from our artist members), or whatever else you feel is relevant and interesting.  Let’s see what develops. Have fun!

I visited Harley Copic on my way to Oshkosh this year.  During that visit, he said he had done a box top for the 1/24 Airfix Mustang kit.  I believe it is his only box top art.  I had no idea.  Now I know why I’ve always liked this one so much.  Here it is:

Wow, fuzzy, I had no idea! That Airfix Mustang box art has always been one of my favourite too. I always felt it was such a great, crisp painting of the P-51D. Thanks for sharing that revelation with us here, and thank you too, for germinating the idea for this model box art forum section with Gus. yo

I have a feeling that this is going to be a well read and contributed section. readnewsbigsmile

One of the colorful paintings by Roy Cross:

BTW: When I was on a holiday trip to Great Britain a few years ago I visited the Royal Air Force Museum in London. There was an exhibition of originalbox art paintings of Roy Cross showing some ready paintings and some of the trials he painted befor he made a final decision on one picture. Unfortunately it was strictly prohibited to take pictures at that exhibition but I could take some regardless but had to take them without a flashlight. One of these is shown below: It is a “first sketch” of the picture shown in my previous post. You can easily figure out the differences besides the fact that this sketch is less detailled but anyway it shows some characteristics of the final painting. Have fun while comparing…

I’ve always absolutely loved this; if there was any single painting which made me want to paint aircraft then this was it. A pity that the promise of such a beautiful image was often not fulfilled by what was in the box.
