There will be some big changes to the site, with many new features and sections that members and visitors will be able to access, use and enjoy.

While the site is being updated, I will be doing quite a bit of testing on the site, so you will be the site changing a fair bit in terms of appearance. Sections may not always be where they were and things may not look as pretty or organized, and images may also be absent.

I would like to ask for your understanding to accommodate these changes while I am changing, testing and refining the different parts of the site, especially the home page.

A number of members have said that they miss the old eHangar home page which showed the forum topics more clearly and which was easier to navigate, compared to the current layout. Members also wanted more visual eye candy in the way of display of aviation art images.

I have taken these comments to heart and now am trying to improve the layout. You will notice that the theme I have adopted looks like a newspaper layout. I believe this theme will work well with the amount of information that the site will hold and present, especially with the upcoming changes.

To accomplish this, I need to customize the theme which means that in the meantime, the page may not look as pretty as you may like it to be. So I ask for your patience while this is being done.

If you have any feedback, comments or questions, please post them in reply to this in the forum.

Cheers
Sunny

Hi Sunny,

Thanks for upgrading the site, when completed it should be very interesting. I have a problem posting images, when viewed in the preview section prior to uploading they look fine. When they are uploaded a portion of the right side of the image is cut off for some reason.

The images are standard size coming from Photobucket  Not sure what is causing it, but if you try it yourself you should see the same result.

Thanks,

Simon

Hi Simon

I noticed this issue too, and believe it is due to two possible reasons which I shall be investigating:

The fixed width of the current theme eHangar.com is using

The image handling script is not resizing the images properly and so display them at full or larger resolution which causes them to be cropped off at the right side.

I shall be looking further into this as soon as possible to fix it.

On another note, I would like to hear from members how you like the new look of the homepage, which is like a newspaper format?

The challenge I have is the amount of information that needs to be displayed on the homepage especially the posts from the forum.

Some people gave feedback that they miss having aviation art displayed on the main page, so I have included the slider which currently shows a selection of 10 images from the gallery. I think it does brighten up the homepage a lot.

Please let me know what you think. smile

Hi Sunny,

The latest changes have made the site painfully, painfully slow and difficult to navigate:

  • I have a fast PC and it is taking 2 minutes for the forum page on remarques to open
  • On posting a reply, similar response in the preview
  • When  logging in it sends me to the Admin color screen selection and my profile
  • Constantly get bumped off the site and have to log in again
  • Cannot find a home button to get from the forum back home

Realize this is a work in progress, is anybody else having problems?

The remarque thread has been very slow for me as well.  When I click on a page with a lot of photos, it takes a very long time to display.  I just opened a remarque page that had only Simon’s recent text reply.  That page opened quickly, as you might expect.  Lots of photos on a page seems to slow things to a crawl.  2-3 minutes to open a page sounds about right.

I doubt many viewers are going to wait that long to see a page.  They’ll probably lose patience and leave.  Speed is of the essence.  If the site’s not quick, people won’t stay.

Same for posting.  If it takes a long time (due to a slow site, or a complicated process, or both), people won’t post.

Quick and simple are the keys.  Other aspects may be nice to have, but are not essential.  Quick and simple are essential.

I like the recent addition to the site of an image from a new artist’s post to the home page (Gorecki’s “Biggest Pencil Case”).  That’s a great idea.  Featuring it on the home page would be a nice incentive for artists to post their work.

Newly published prints & giclees usually get posted by members, so get good exposure.  I would think the added exposure for artists would be appreciated and encourage them to post on the site.

Hi Sunny,

Wow, the eHangar site is really coming along – attractive, well laid out and easy to navigate!  Congratulations to you and your web designers.  My one little “nit” is that the “Log in” link is a little difficult to locate (at least initially) at the bottom of the home page.  Other than that, things are looking good!  Thanks for all the time and effort you put into this; it’s much appreciated.

Hi Guss

Thank you for your feedback. Its nice to know you like it. I’ll convey your congrats to my team, which comprises me, myself and I! ;)

As per your comment, I have added a Login / Register link at the top for easier access. Thank you for that suggestion.

There will be some other changes soon, some new additions to the features on the site. Stay tuned! :)

Hi Kurt

How is the speed of the site now? Have you seen any improvements on your end?

Thanks for the quick fix to relocate the log-in link Sunny – it’s much easier to find now (at least for me).  And it sounds like you have a GREAT team working on this!

Hi Sunny,

When I clicked on this thread, it took just a couple of seconds for it to come up.

I clicked on the remarque thread, and it took 36 seconds to load the thread.  I clicked the link at the top to get back to the home page, and that took 22 seconds.

So, the site is considerably faster than it was.  Hopefully it’s fast enough for most users.

I’ll plan on doing a few more tests at different times and posting the results to get a feel for site speed.  Other users should feel free to do the same.  The more data, the better.

Kurt
