Hey Fuzzy,

Didn’t realize until last weekend when I started going through my stuff but I found I had that exact Copic print. Given to me when I left Mustang Flight as a T-37 IP. I may see if I can get Harley to sign it. Also thanks for the hookup. Been in chats with the man and have found what I sought. Am definitely considering flying myself up to visit and discuss the possibility of a commission. I’ve always wanted a painting of my Viper. His “Into the jaws of hell” is exactly what I’ve had in mind.

Dave,

You should go up and see Harley. He’s got a nice little art gallery up there that I’m sure you’d enjoy. He always seems to have several paintings in the works too.

Harley has painted quite a few F-16’s for the USAF Art Program and the ANG. Both of his sons work on ANG F-16’s. Nobody is more qualified to paint a Viper for you!

A 352nd FG (Bluenoser) ace from the Mustang Aces series.

Harley Copic “Mustang Aces – Whisner” (original):

Harley Copic “Mustang Aces – Whisner” (print):

Usually these prints aren’t signed. I took mine to the 352nd FG reunion a couple of years back and had a number of pilots sign it.

Unfortunately, my copy has a water stain on the bottom left corner. I’m on the lookout for a copy in good shape. If you know of one, please contact me.

The “Mustang Aces” series was done over 30 years ago.

I believe they were Harley’s first oil paintings, and his first print releases. They hold a special place for Harley, as he has kept all the “Mustang Aces” originals.

Harley will tell you that he’s learned a few tricks of the trade over the years, and that’s true. However, a few of these (Whisner, Goodson, and Hartmann from “Luftwaffe Aces”) are are favorites of mine to this day.

Another 352nd FG (Bluenoser) ace, and the last print in the Mustang Aces series. Unfortunately, I don’t have a pic of the original.

Again, these prints aren’t usually signed. I took mine to the 352nd FG reunion in DC a couple of years back and had a number of pilots sign it.

Here’s a superb Mustang print. Load’s of detail and action. Vivid color. Beautiful sky. Signed by one of the greatest pilots of all time – Chuck Yeager.

These are hard to find and usually carry secondary market prices. Last I heard, Harley still had a few of these at the issue price of $150. Not bad for a print this good with a Yeager signature.

The last Mustang print I’ve got. It features the aircraft of Gentile & Godfrey.

This is a limited edition artist signed print. They normally don’t have pilot signatures, but I took mine to a 4th FG reunion and had it signed. The edition size was only 400, and they have been sold out for quite a while. Unfortunately, this photo is not very crisp.

Cranston must have some. I have not seen a US dealer that has any. The Military Art Gallery is the only US dealer who has a listing, and it says sold out. I asked Harley and he doesn’t have any either. So, if you want one, try Cranston!

Deadly Duo arrived today – very nice!

one of the few Copic prints I still see listed on sites is Return to Leiston but the online image looks very poor. Anyone have a photo of a hard copy?

Unfortunately I don’t have a photo of “Return To Leiston”. One of these days I need to get one.

That’s it for the Mustangs, now for the Thunderbolts. Unfortunately, Harley only has two prints of the Thunderbolt that I am aware of. Here’s the first (prints were signed by Bud, but I added Robert Rankin, Jerry Johnson, Fred Christensen & Gabby Gabreski to mine):

Harley Copic “Bud’s Jug”:

The markings on this are unusual. A red band on the cowl has replaced the white band we are so familiar with on UN-M. Harley worked with Bud Mahurin on this painting, and Bud specified the markings. In fact, the wreckage of Bud’s plane was eventually discovered. Bud received some pieces of the wreckage from one of the people involved in the discovery. Bud sent a piece of the cowl to Harley to help him with the color. Harley said it was pretty cool to hold a piece of UN-M in his hand, but he eventually had to send it back!

Harley’s other Thunderbolt print, and one of my favorites. These are signed by Robert S. Johnson. Harley still has these at $150.

Great artist (one of my all-time favourites) and great images. Thanks, Kurt, for posting these.

Your photography skills are not just ok, they are actually good! Especially since you say you only have a point and shoot. I love those closeups that show the great details in the paintings. 8)

Keep ’em coming! 🙂

I forgot to post this earlier.

My brother-in-law had one of Harley’s “Luftwaffe Aces – Hartmann” prints framed. He had taken it to a “framer” years ago. It didn’t look very nice, and he wanted me to put new mats on it (keeping the frame & glass). They had used cheap mats that turned yellow. Upon opening their “framing” job, I discovered such quality materials as masking tape had been used. Nice. Fortunately, they had not butchered the print, and I was able to get everything put back together with conservation materials. Plus I added a few items (including a Hartmann signature) to spruce it up. Given the constraint of keeping the frame, I think it turned out pretty nice. You have to be careful when choosing a framer!

Harley’s got a couple of Pacific prints. Here’s one featuring Boyington’s Corsair.

Some part of the edition was signed by Boyington, but I’m not sure how many. This is one of the Boyington signed prints.

This one has extra signatures. I took this to the “Gathering of Corsairs and Legends” in Indianapolis many years ago and had it signed by 10 of Boyington’s Black Sheep. That was a great event! Very well attended.

Harley’s done a few post-war prints. Here’s the Bell X-1. These are signed by Chuck Yeager.
