Pete,

Thank you for your effort!

You obviously went to great effort to find all of these images and include the relevant commentary.  It’s a stunning array of artists and styles.  It’s a great thread to browse.

There can never be too much attention paid to WW1 in my opinion!  The ratio of WW2 to WW1 art is probably about 50 to 1.

I particularly enjoyed seeing all the different interpretations of the famous Hawker versus MvR duel.  It’s so interesting to see the unique results of so many artists’ efforts.

I’m delighted to see so many of Merv Corning’s paintings here.He was one of my heros when I was growing up,later after art school was able to give me excellent advice & later still became a good friend. It was because of his one man shows at the Nut Tree in California that I really considered making this a career…a decision that at times I had reasons to reconsider the fool heartiness of that youthful decision…but that is another story…

This is an ad from Model Airplane News circa 1958 & you can see how early Avionix Press was marketing his prints..Interestingly enough I don’t find his name mentioned…strange that .

Thanks James,

I love Merv Cornings work and looking at his paintings of American footballers, I can see how his style influenced your own work.

 Regards Peter

That’s it for the chronology. Thanks to ehangar for letting me edit the thread and re-arrange some of the pictures into their correct order and also insert a few new ones I recently found.

Thank you to all the responses and kind words from ehangar members, I appreciate your nice comments. I really enjoyed writing this thread.

I am thinking of doing a thread on the year 1917 but it will be somewhat larger than this one. And if I ever decide to do one on 1918, which seems to be THE year as far as aviation art portraying WW1 goes, it will be enormous!

Pete

Hi Guys,

have just reworked the thread a little, inserting a few new pictures I have found and adding them chronologically. Sorry I have been quiet of late but I have been working a lot of late shifts meaning that I haven’t had much computer time!

However I am keen to get on with the 1917 thread I have started and am also planning one on Pearl Harbour. Stay tuned. Pete.
