Some OUTSTANDING artwork this year Kurt.  It’s going to be tough to pick – I think they’re all winners!

Agreed Gus!  Again I’m pleasantly surprised by the participation.  Last year’s contest was a great one – lots of quality aviation art to enjoy.  This year looks great too.  The only downside is winnowing the field.  I hate it when I don’t have a vote left for works I really love.

Be sure and pester your artist and collector friends to add their works!  I know a couple of guys who need to put their things in the contest!

“Fiat G.50 Freccia (Arrow)”

12 x 16 Acrylic On Canvas

This particular Italian G.50 fought in the late stages of the Battle of Britain.  There is an instance of G.50s escorting Stukas in the “Lictorian Fasces Over England” book.

“Polikarpov I-153”

12 x 16 Acrylic On Canvas

I included a detail shot to show the nice surface features Darryl added to this painting.

One more thing.  Staging this contest over the last couple of years has been very difficult.  The site just wasn’t working well.  All that’s been fixed, so thank you Sunny!  Everything has been smooth as silk this year.

As long as I’m popping in paintings for other members, I thought I’d add Taylorprint’s acquisition this year.  Simon – hope you don’t mind!

Last one I’ve got.  If you have something to add, you’ve got a little less than 24 hours to add it!

For me, a painting usually starts with a particular airplane I’m interested in.  This one was different.  It features the Hansa-Brandenburg W.12, an airplane I knew virtually nothing about.

However, I had seen this image before, and thought it was a great painting.  The airplane itself sure is interesting.  The sea and sky are extremely well-done.  And the U-boat ads so much to the painting.  When I found out the painting was available, I decided to take the plunge.

Finding out more about the aircraft and its service was fascinating.  The W.12 was designed to be a long range, highly maneuverable, two-seat fighter.  The extremely sturdy, triangulated, float strut arrangement under the lower wing ensured great strength while almost doing away with the need for any wing rigging.  This made the W.12 fast and gave it long range.  It was an incredibly efficient design.

The British used a series of fast flying boats as scouts for the Royal Navy.  Their reconnaisance put the smaller German fleet at constant risk.  The W.12 was used to hunt them down.  There were quite a few encounters over the open sea where all that remained for the vanquished was a watery grave.
